For those of you that don’t know, in addition to posting regular (ish) bits and pieces on this blog, I also work full time as a journalist for

And as part of my work last week I got the chance to try out something of an odd beauty hack, courtesy of model-turned-actress Suki Waterhouse. During an interview a couple of weeks ago, Suki mentioned that she rinses her hair with Coca-Cola in order to give it some extra texture and bounce – a bit like a sea salt spray I guess?

Anywho, being the beauty-loving weirdo that I am, I instantly jumped at the chance to give this weird haircare routine a go for myself at home because hey, who doesn’t need more volume in their hair, huh?

Now, I wrote all about my experience with this unique hair washing alternative for work – which you can read here – but I thought I would break it down a bit for you just in case any of you have a burning desire to try this technique out at home.

Interestingly, the actual hair washing process wasn’t too bad – although I did splash a week bit in my eye (FYI y’all, Coke burns) – and it did make my shower slightly sticky, otherwise it was absolutely fine and dandy. I was actually fairly impressed with the way that it made my hair smell – like those amazing Coca-Cola Haribo that I’ve been obsessed with for years.

However, it was in the morning that the true results could be seen, and I’m sorry to say it was an absolute disaster. While my hair was soft, and a little bit fluffy at the ends (does fluff count as texture?), the roots were lank, limp and oh-so ruddy greasy. Like, really greasy. Three-day-old wash greasy. Yes, it was that bad.

So I think it’s fair to say I won’t be giving this a go again anytime soon – but in the meantime I would love to hear what bizarre beauty hacks you guys have at home? Let me know in the comments below…!

  1. I would never even think about washing my hair with Cola what a weird beauty trick. I’m actually kinda happy it didn’t work out lol as I would have been tempted to try it.

When I heard about this I was pretty sure it could only work on a specific hair type or that she must have been doing this for a long time so her hair could get use to it. I’m kind of glad you tried it out and that it was a no- go actually because if it did work I would be wondering what the hell is in coke? I mean I don’t drink it, but if it can be used for cleaning your hair why would we ever drink it in the first place?!
