Sephora has long been one of my favourite make up stores. It’s a true haven for beauty lovers, from the brilliant range of brands to the incredible selection of samples, it has something to offer everyone.
And while I’ve gone years living in the UK, hundreds of miles away from the nearest Sephora – sob – being in New York means that I’m now surrounded by them, and I think it’s safe to say I’ve done my best to take full advantage of that piece of geographical brilliance!
Having the luxury of being able to walk into any of the brand’s stores at almost any time has meant that I’ve had so much more time to really get to know what they have on offer, beyond the hours of online browsing that my Sephora shopping used to be restricted to. And one thing that I’ve noticed since being here in the US is the huge number of brilliant own-brand products Sephora is releasing at the moment.
Sure, they sell a whole heap of brilliant brands – Tarte, Kat Von D, NARS, Urban Decay, the list is endless – but, in my mind, a lot of the own-label products are just as ace, and deserve to be given just as much attention.
Take the Sephora Triple Action Cleansing Water, for example. This stuff is just utterly marvellous; it removes my make up quickly and efficiently, doesn’t leave any greasy or oily residue and doesn’t dry out my skin. I’d even go as far to say that I prefer it to any other micellar water I’ve tried. Including Bioderma. Controversial, I know… But for all your cleansing water fans out there, this is definitely one you have to try.
Same too with the Sephora Waterproof Eye Make Up Remover, which has the same sort of dual-phase formula found in similar products by Clarins and L’Oreal. And do you know what? I think it is almost as effective as every other alternative that I’ve tried – I do still think Clarins reigns supreme in this category – yet this costs just a fraction of the price…
Then there are the Sephora Pro Brushes. I admit that I initially turned my nose up at these; as far as I was concerned they were too expensive for what they were, and I was happy to carry on using my most-loved brush brands, without needing to try anything that Sephora had to offer. I know, I sound like a serious brat… But, common sense got the better of me, and during my last Sephora trip, I picked up the Pro Large Domed Stippling Brush, in the hopes that it would rock my brush world just as much as everyone promised it would.
Well, to start with, I was furious. Upon first use, this thing shed hairs all. over. my. face. leaving me with one of those disastrous make up brush beards that seems to stick around no matter how many hairs you remove from your face. But, after a fair bit of perseverance, and a fair few washes, the brush has been transformed and now creates one of the most beautifully flawless foundation finishes, leaving my face looking totally fresh, smooth and perfectly blended. It’s the dream.
And last, but not least, another dream product, the Sephora Instant Nail Polish Remover for Glitter. Any die-hard nail polish fans out there will no doubt understand why the launch of this product caused such a flutter of excitement in my heart, but for those of you still scratching your heads with confusion, allow me to explain. Glitter nail polish – be it chunky, grainy or smooth – is a nightmare to remove. It shreds cotton wool pads like you wouldn’t believe, sticks to the nails like none other and essentially makes a meal out of the whole removal process.
So when a nail polish remover claims that it can remove your glitter lacquer without any muss or fuss – indeed, with no other effort required other than popping your finger into a pot – it’s safe to say it’s going to be a best-seller. Provided it can live up to its name. Luckily, in this case, Sephora have done a pretty stellar job, and this pot of remover does manage to strip away all of that pesky polish that used to cause so much stress and frustration. The only drawback? It’s a wee bit drying on the old nails and cuticles, but thankfully nothing that a good old hand cream can’t cure…!
Next up on my Sephora hit list is the much sought-after Sephora Matte Lip Cream… Only time will tell whether this will be the product to finally sway me towards a matte lip formula. Watch this space!
