* topshop lips in mescaline c/o £8 *
A few weeks (it might actually be months now…. gosh), I popped along to the Topshop Beauty press day to see what the brilliant high street brand had in store for Autumn/Winter and beyond. In addition to the freckle pencil – which I spoke about at length back here – one of my favourite aspects of the incredibly impressive line-up was the Metallic Collection.
The collection includes metallic nail polishes, metallic cream blushes – which are beautiful – and, most interesting to me, metallic lipsticks. Now metallic nails and cheeks are both things that I’ve tried before in the past, but metallic lip was a fairly new concept as far as I was concerned and one which I was quite eager – if not a little bit nervous – to give a go.
Enter Mescaline, one of four metallic lip shades included in the collection. Categorised as ‘gold’ in colour, it’s the only shade which shows no real trace of any pink tones and is instead decidedly more of a brown-y nude. In other words, the complete opposite of what I usually look for in a lippy – but in this case I think it really works, no? There’s something about the bronzy brown shade of this which doesn’t look too overdone or ‘frosted’, which I think is a bit of a risk when you’re going for a metallic finish. In fact, paired with a simple, matte eye and subtle blush, the lipstick works really well, making a statement without standing out in a ‘woah’ kind of way.
Now it’s probably not a trend that I’m going to work on a day-to-day basis, but for special occasions – particularly as we head into ‘party season’ with fashion week etc just around the corner (eek) – I can definitely see myself giving the metallic lip a good ole whirl. What do you guys reckon?
