I made a gif, I made a gif! *Dances around room in celebration*

Right, now onto the point of this post, the Maybelline Lasting Drama Black Shock Gel LinerA lot has been written about this eyeliner in recent weeks – mostly because it is almost identical to the new Benefit They’re Real Push-Up Liner but, being a drugstore brand product, is one helluva lot cheaper. And that’s never a bad thing, right?!

From what I can see out there on the blog/vlogasphere, both products have had a hugely varied reaction – people either love ’em and hail them as a revolutionary eyeliner product or really, really hate ’em and claim they don’t work – and it was hard to really figure out which group I’d be in without giving one of them a go. So in the interests of penny-pinching and budgeting, I opted for the cheaper Maybelline option, which rings in at £8.99, in comparison with the Benefit price tag of £18.50.

First of all, I’ll try and explain how this bad boy works. The eyeliner has a rubber nib (which you can see in the photo) and the gel eyeliner pushes up through a slit in the nib, ready to be applied to your lid. So far, so easy, ish. Formula-wise, the gel liner in this product is pretty brill. It’s soft enough to apply smoothly, but black enough that you get a good thick line. Plus it’s pretty darn long=lasting, although there was a slight crumble issue after a few hours…

While I wish I could say that this eyeliner immediately turned me into a catflick queen but I have to admit it took me a wee while to get my head around how best to use it. While the formula applies really smoothly, I found that the rubber nib distributed the product a bit unevenly and I was left with slightly wonky lines most of the time. After a lot of attempts – it’s an idea to keep some eye makeup remover close by when you first give this a go! – I managed to master it. Ish.

As you can see from the above, the results are by no means perfect, but I like to think it was a pretty good first (ok, eighth) attempt! Give me a few more tries and I reckon I’ll have the perfect catflick in no time.

What do you guys think of the new Maybelline and Benefit eyeliners? Are you a lover or a hater…? I’m currently perched on the fence and think I might need a bit more time to play around with it before I make my final decision. Marmite on the other hand, I LOVE.

        You’re welcome 🙂 xo

  2. I think I love the idea of eyeliner, and Benefit’s liner does last quite a while but it does take a long time to get used to it.

    1. The first time that I gave it a go it was AWFUL. But I think I’m starting to get more used to it! xx
