I’ve had some trouble sleeping recently and nine times out of ten, the first piece of advice that people give as a potential solution to this problem is ‘have a bath’. Now, for a lot of people out there, this would no doubt be the ideal answer but I’m every so slightly weird in that I don’t really like baths. At all.

Believe me, I’ve tried, I really have – and from the outside they look ruddy awesome – but it just isn’t meant to be.

So, putting this sad bath phobia behind me, I’ve worked out a pre-sleep routine that is guaranteed to result in the sweetest night’s sleep you’ll ever have – and not one second of tub soaking is needed.

First up, and this is the step that I found the hardest, try and avoid staring at any kind of screen for at least half an hour before you go to bed. Read a book – my pre-sleep read of choice is currently Beauty by Lauren Conrad, it’s ace – or a magazine, listen to some music or do a crossword. Anything to keep you from going a bit square-eyed. You’ll be amazed at what a different it makes. 

If this book can be accompanied by a warm drink – hot chocolate with a copious amount of mini marshmallows for me please – and your candle of choice – I’m burning the last remaining remnants of my Laura Mercier Warm Roasted Chestnuts Signature Candle – then that’s even better and will set you up nicely for some serious relaxation. Just don’t forget to blow out the candle before you hit the hay once and for all! 

During the colder winter months, a toasty blanket – mine is from Primark – and a water bottle – this one is a Paperchase purchase – will also help to make you feel nice and cosy ready for the duvet.

One of my favourite touches – and one which never makes me feel relaxed – is a sweetly scented linen spray, such as the Disney Wonder Linen Spraya super sweet scent that makes my bed just that much more inviting. Coupled with a few dabs of the This Works Sleep Balm on your pressure – full to the brim of nourishing ingredients such as lavender, monoi and coconut oil – and an additional drop or two of the LIz Earle Superskin Concentrate – which also contains lavender oil, as well as soothing neroli and chamomile essential oils – and you’re well on your way to a great night’s sleep.

Bedtime has never been so brilliant.
